It seems like new restaurants are opening and reopening every week on Sanibel Island, and this month is no different! In April, there were two more grand openings that brought plenty of delicious new food for residents and tourists to enjoy all summer long. Wickies and Cheeburger Cheeburger are two new restaurant hotspots we are happy to see open on Sanibel Island.
Welcome Wickies!
Wickies is located on the corner of Periwinkle and Buttonwood Lane, and it is the brainchild of two other notable Sanibel restaurants, The Mad Hatter and The Island Cow. The name of Wickies comes from a slang term that used to refer to lighthouse keepers, in a nod to the famous Sanibel lighthouse. Brian Podlasek and Max Kolshak both wanted to create something new as they rebuilt their own restaurants, and they took concepts and ideas from both The Mad Hatter and the Island Cow to create Wickies.
Wickies is located in a space once occupied by another one of many favorite Sanibel restaurants, the Lighthouse Café. The Lighthouse Café is preparing to reopen in another location, on Periwinkle by Bailey’s Road. Wickies is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 8 AM-9 PM. You can dine in or call ahead to take out.
Cheeburger Cheeburger
Another notable addition to the growing number of Sanibel restaurants is Cheeburger Cheeburger. This restaurant is reopening in the same location that it was before Hurricane Ian hit, and it is a beloved dining spot for locals and tourists alike. This restaurant is a unique 50s-style diner that serves up amazing milkshakes, delicious burgers, and piping hot French fries. Feeling extra hungry and up for a challenge? Try the Cheeburger Cheeburger challenge! You’ll have 30 minutes to finish a two-and-a-half-pound premium beef burger with lettuce, tomato, and onion, as well as a full side of French fries and a milkshake of your choosing. If you tackle the challenge, you’ll get your photo on the Cheeburger Wall of Fame and a t-shirt.
