the island forever. On September 28, 2023, at 7:00 AM at the Lighthouse Beach Park, the city of Sanibel
will be hosting a special sunrise remembrance.
The City Of Sanibel Hurricane Ian Sunrise Remembrance
This event will be taking place on Thursday, September 28 at Lighthouse Beach Park on Sanibel Island.
The ceremony is slated for 7:00 AM to correlate with the sunrise. The current mayor, Richard Johnson,
will be speaking, as well as former majors and other county officials. This community event is a way for
everyone to get together and remember those who were lost and the journey that the entire island has
made to return to what it is today.
Remembering Hurricane Ian
Hurricane Ian took a major toll on Sanibel Island, from shuttering businesses to even cutting off vehicle
access for a period of time after the weather event. The barrier islands, including Sanibel and Captiva,
were devastated by Hurricane Ian. One ABC News team visiting the islands called Sanibel
“unrecognizable” in the immediate aftermath. First responders from Florida and other states flocked to
the area to help remove citizens and visitors from the island, distribute food, and provide medical aid.
They remained a source Of hope in the wake Of overwhelming damage.

It is amazing to see how much recovery has happened in a relatively short period of time one year later.
Wildlife populations are slowly starting to recover. The Sanibel Causeway is open again, and
construction is continuing to allow businesses and restaurants to return and reopen. There are new
events taking place, delicious places to eat, and plenty of reasons to be excited for the future.
