Sanibel Island is already starting to gear up for an exciting event in 2024—the 50th birthday of the city of Sanibel! The island is currently planning a variety of fun ways to celebrate this huge occasion. In this blog, we’ll be walking you through some of the interesting and surprising history of the place that we call home.

The History of the City of Sanibel
The city of Sanibel was first incorporated on November 5, 1974. While it received this official designation in 1974, the land that makes up the island itself is estimated to be approximately 6,000 years old and carved out by the currents of the Gulf. The earliest inhabitants were from the Calusa Tribe. This tribe occupied land throughout southwest Florida, and there are still some descendants around to this day.
The name shared is shared by Sanibel Island and the city of Sanibel is somewhat a mystery. The first appearance of the island was in 1765 on a map. It was labeled as Puerto de S. Nibel at the time. Many think that the name was derived from this word, but some others think that Sanibel comes from Santa Ybel, which once stood where the lighthouse is now.
The Sanibel Island Light has been a key feature of the city of Sanibel and the Gulf since 1884 when it was built after residents lobbied for a lighthouse to be erected. The first lighthouse keeper, Dudley Richardson, lit it on August 20, 1884. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The City of Sanibel Today
The city is solely situated on the 12-mile Sanibel Island, and it currently boasts approximately 6,000 residents throughout the year. This anniversary is particularly important to people on the island as we continue to recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Ian.
Sanibel is also known as the seashell capital of the world, as it is home to a whopping 250+ different shell species. It’s also home to the only shell museum in the entire United States, where you can take in an impressive and expansive collection of shells. As the island continues to reopen after Hurricane Ian, it’s one of the best places to visit on Earth!
