Those living on Sanibel Island know how beautiful and unique it is, so it’s always exciting to share it with others! CBS Sunday Morning stopped by the Island to visit the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge and take a look at the remarkable recovery of many local species in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.

Spotlight on Sanibel
Hurricane Ian was a frightening and devastating time for many on Sanibel Island—and that includes more than just the people. This video showcased the amazing progress that local wildlife species have made in returning to their habitats. This progress mirrors the amazing recovery that has happened in other places on the island, as the Sanibel & Captiva Islands Visitors Center reopens and many restaurants and businesses are also welcoming customers back.
All About the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge
The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is on Sanibel Island, and it is one part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem currently in the United States. It was created by President Truman in 1945 and renamed in 1967. It is renowned worldwide for having amazing populations of migratory birds.
As part of the refuge, you can visit the Education Center. There are many different brochures available, as well as a nature store and exhibits about the ecosystem, local birds, and more. Next, you can drive, walk, or bike the four-mile Wildlife Drive and enjoy walking trails, canoe launches, and local wildlife and greenery.
