Sanibel Lighthouse Repairs are Complete

The Sanibel Island Lighthouse was one of the first lighthouses on Florida’s Gulf Coast, having first been lit in August of 1884. Due to its rich history, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The lighthouse has become a symbol of Sanibel Island, and the damage it sustained from Hurricane Ian in 2022 didn’t keep it down for long! The lighthouse is back up and running, and the people of Sanibel celebrate it as a symbol of strength, resilience, and resolve.

Hurricane Ian and the Sanibel Lighthouse

When the hurricane struck the island in 2022, it destroyed the lighthouse keeper’s quarters and broke one of the lighthouse’s four iron legs, sweeping it out to sea. A temporary wooden leg was added to the Sanibel Lighthouse as a means of keeping it balanced while plans were made for its permanent repair. Sanibel Mayor Richard Johnson contacted the original building company in Pennsylvania and began the project right away. Now, the repairs are complete, with a fresh new coat of paint and new barriers to help brace against future storms, to boot! The lighthouse is more a symbol of Sanibel’s strength than ever, and can be visited on your trip to Lighthouse Beach Park.

Beach Restoration Projects

Sanibel Lighthouse isn’t the only attraction on Lighthouse Beach, which reopened in June 2023. Lighthouse Beach was the last of Sanibel’s beaches to reopen, and all beaches can be visited for your next vacation. Questions are still in the air about how Lighthouse Beach will be rebuilt. Sanibel Public Information Officials look forward to aligning with public input about amenities and buildings to be restored or built on the beach. Feedback is currently mixed, with some visitors requesting the preservation of the beach’s natural beauty and limited building. Others hope to see more amenities to make their beach stay more comfortable, including more restaurants, food trucks, and snack vendors. No timeline has been set for the decisions regarding further beach development, but the city is unlikely to build close to the water, either way.
