When movie directors and producers are looking for new places to film, there are plenty of options scattered all over the world. Because there are so many options, it’s always an honor when they choose Sanibel Island! What are some of the movies that have featured Sanibel in the past, and will you be seeing us again in the future?
Night Moves
Night Moves stars Gene Hackman and Melanie Griffith, and it was nominated for 1 BAFTA award. This movie follows a private investigator searching for a client’s runaway daughter. Many of the Florida scenes were filmed on Sanibel Island. While the movie did not have a great deal of acclaim at the time, it is now considered to be an excellent example of a neo-noir film and one of the classics of the era.
Day of the Dead
One of the most frightening things on Sanibel Island is George Romero’s film Day of the Dead. This horror movie is a cult classic, and it has shots of downtown Fort Myers shot from a helicopter that eventually lands on Sanibel Island. While notable features of the island don’t feature prominently in the movie, it’s incredibly exciting to see our island in such a celebrated movie.
Future Projects: Written in the Sand
In December 2023, RC Otter’s Island Eats and Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille on Sanibel were two of the places that closed for filming for a romantic movie production called Written in the Sand starring JT Hodges. This production was plenty of fun, as numerous locals and regular customers and staff had the opportunity to work as extras on the film. While everyone with direct knowledge of the production is sworn to secrecy, many people believe that the movie is a Hallmark production. Time will tell, and we hope to be enjoying a holiday Sanibel Island movie this year!
