Sanibel Causeway Islands Park Is Open Again for the First Time Since Hurricane Ian

After nearly three years of waiting and relentless restoration efforts after the impact of Hurricane Ian, the Sanibel Causeway Islands Park has officially reopened to the public as of May 1, 2025. This milestone marks a significant step in Southwest Florida’s recovery from the devastating impact of Hurricane Ian in 2022. The Islands Park underwent a tremendous amount of damage from the hurricane, including pieces of the causeway being washed away entirely. How has the restoration process brought back this great piece of Sanibel Island?

Hurricane Ian’s Aftermath

On September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall as a powerful Category 4 storm, bringing with it catastrophic winds and a massive storm surge that severely damaged the Sanibel Causeway. Sections of the bridge were damaged, effectively severing Sanibel Island’s connection to the mainland and leaving residents and emergency services cut off. The destruction went beyond the bridge itself, as the adjacent Causeway Islands Park was filled with storm debris, damaged, and rendered unusable until repairs could be made.

Restoration Took Collaboration

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Ian, emergency crews worked around the clock to establish temporary access to Sanibel Island. By October 19, 2022, temporary repairs allowed residents to return to the island, more than a week ahead of schedule. However, the long-term goal was to rebuild Sanibel Causeway and Causeway Islands Park with enhanced resilience to withstand future storms.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) spearheaded the causeway’s reconstruction, focusing on structural integrity and durability. By investing in the reconstruction process, the state and local government hoped that future hurricane damage could be mitigated. After the causeway restoration was completed, Lee County Parks & Recreation resumed efforts to redesign and improve the adjacent Causeway Islands Park areas.

Phase One Is Now Complete

The reopening of Causeway Islands Park on May 1st marked the completion of Phase One of the restoration project. Visitors can now enjoy free on-site parking, restrooms, and designated areas to dispose of trash and recycling. Park rangers and staff will be present at the park to assist guests and ensure that everyone is following park rules. Additionally, volunteers from local wildlife organizations will be on-site to educate visitors about nesting shorebirds and help protect clearly marked areas to protect these vulnerable species.

What Is Coming Next?

Lee County is currently in the design phase for Phase Two of Sanibel Causeway Islands Park. Some of the planned upgrades during this phase include structured parking areas, permanent restrooms, improved beach access, ADA accommodations, outdoor showers, site drainage and irrigation systems, shade structures, and landscaping. The design phase is expected to be completed by summer 2025, with construction starting later this year and completion projected for 2026.
