A new initiative was just put into place by the Lee Board of County Commissioners known as Savor the Shore. This campaign is designed to help increase tourist activity on Sanibel Island and push everyone to enjoy all the attractions and restaurants that the island has to offer. As part of this, Sanibel bridges will now be toll-free for the next six Sundays.
A Free Trip Across Sanibel Bridges
Tolls for the Causeway are now going to be waived every Sunday from now through September 10th. This Savor the Store initiative will help encourage all local residents and late-season tourists to take advantage of the many amazing things to see and do on our Island. It is important to note that the Causeway is the only bridge that will be toll-free, not other Lee County bridges.

Savor the Shore is designed to help local residents rediscover the beauty of Sanibel Island. While everyone knows about the beaches and the amazing natural wonders, the Island has been working tirelessly to recover in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Many restaurants and retail stores experienced hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage and are just now reopening to serve the public again.
The rebuilding process has been time-consuming and expensive, and getting people to visit again is a top priority for both Sanibel businesses and the Lee Board of County Commissioners. Compared to last year, many restaurants are down about 60-70% in terms of business volume, and sustained support from the local community is vital to their survival. While waiving tolls on Sanibel bridges can’t fix every problem, it is expected to help funnel increased business during the late summer and early fall—times when it will typically start to decline.
