While the day of the celebration was rainy, spirits were high. The time capsule was initially buried ten years ago when Sanibel Island was just a decade old, and it was part of the 10th-anniversary celebration and designed to help celebrate the building of the city hall. There were many local celebrities and politicians attending, including former mayors, former city council members, county representatives, and state representatives.

The Sanibel Island time capsule was a blast from the past, and it included:
- News articles from the past
- A book of Sanibel Causeway tickets
- A junonia shell
- Photographs
- Old flyers from Jerry’s Foods and Bailey’s General Store
- Issues of the Sanibel-Captiva Islander and Island Reporter from 1983
- Memorabilia
- And more!
At the celebration, one of the letters in the time capsule was read. It was written by Mike Klein, a former mayor, and discussed the hopes that everyone on the island had for increasing tourism while protecting the natural beauty and wildlife of the island. If you missed out on seeing the items at the time capsule celebration, the city plans on putting them on permanent display in the near future!
