How the Sanibel Beach Recovery Project Will Have Beaches Visitor-Ready This Summer

As Sanibel Island and Captiva Island continue to recover from Hurricane Ian in 2022, many beaches have reopened. However, some beaches are missing critical sand to restore the shoreline and provide a great place for people to visit and animals to live. The Sanibel Beach Recovery Project is taking the lead and helping restore every Sanibel beach. What changes can you expect to see in place for the summer?

The Sanibel Beach Recovery Project

Starting in mid-December, numerous trucks have been delivering fresh sand to Sanibel beaches. This sand is going to be used to reverse the serious erosion that has occurred since late September 2022 when Hurricane Ian hit the island. Because of the scale of the project, it is going to involve many trucks of sand and multiple phases to ensure success. Crews will be working from beach to beach, so they will be finished one at a time. Because there are five total lengths of beach being worked on, it is anticipated that there will be five phases.

How Long Will the Project Last?

Work has already begun, and the construction crews believe that the fifth and final phase of the beach restoration project will be finished in early April. Because over 400,000 tons of sand are going to be brought onto the island, it will take multiple months for the process to be finished. Beaches are expected to be reopened normally for the summer of 2024.

Will Shelling Be Impacted?

When you visit any Sanibel beach, you expect to have the opportunity to go shelling. Thankfully, shelling should not be impacted by the Sanibel Beach Recovery Project. The sand that is going to be added to the beaches will be added above the waterline, so shells should still be easily recoverable.
