Hurricane Ian took a catastrophic toll on some businesses on Sanibel Island. Others have worked tirelessly to rebuild and reopen in the aftermath. As time goes by, there are many reopenings that give residents and tourists alike plenty to get excited about! What are some of the newest reopenings on Sanibel Island and Captiva Island?

The Rachel Pierce Art Gallery
When Rachel Pierce opened her first art gallery near Periwinkle Way on Sanibel Island, she only had a few months to enjoy it before Hurricane Ian rolled through and destroyed the business and almost all of the inventory. For Rachel, the reopening process was not just about rebuilding and remodeling the inside of the art gallery itself; it was also about recreating a great deal of artwork.
This past month, The Rachel Pierce Art Gallery reopened at 1571 Periwinkle Way. In 2024, she is planning on expanding to also open a coffee shop next door with local brews and treats. At the reopening, Rachel made a point to thank the local community for all of their support. The rebuilding process has not been easy, but the gallery is back and better than ever. The store is open from 10 AM-3 PM daily and has gifts, prints, and originals.
The Lighthouse Café Is Reopening
Another Sanibel Island fixture, the Lighthouse Café, was destroyed during Hurricane Ian. The owner has been working hard to rebuild not only his business but also his home. He recently signed a lease for a new location at 1020 Periwinkle Way. This building was previously the home of Sanibel Fresh and Bennett’s Fresh Roast. Luckily, the new location will have room for 102 diners instead of the last location, which could only accommodate 64. The café is expected to reopen in January 2024.
Sanibel Day Spa Is Back!
After a few delays, Sanibel Day Spa will be reopening on Sanibel Island on January 2nd! Initially the spa will be open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00 AM-6:00 PM, but they plan on adding more availability in the near future. They are now accepting appointments, and you can read more on their Facebook page.
