3 Hidden Gems on Captiva Island

Added: Jul 05, 2022
Category: Island Info

Captiva is a crown jewel in Florida. A mix of natural beauty, pristine beaches, and historical sites, Captiva Island is a paradise for vacationers. There are so many great things to do on this beautiful island south of Sanibel, including kayaking, hiking, visiting the beach, and more. However, you might be looking for offbeat activities that are tailored to your interests. Perhaps you’ve visited Captiva before, and you’re interested in seeing what else the island has to offer. If you’re looking to veer off the beaten track and avoid crowds this year, check out these three hidden gems on Captiva Island.

3 Hidden Gems on Captiva Island

1.      Jungle Drums Gallery

Owned by local artists Kathleen and Jim Mazzotta, Jungle Drums gallery showcases artwork dedicated to the wildlife of Captiva Island. If you love nature and art, this is one hidden gem on Captiva Island that you won’t want to miss. The gallery features everything from portraits and clocks to jewelry and sculptures. Works from national and international artists are featured here as well as pieces from local residents. Best of all, when you purchase art to bring home at Jungle Drums, you support Captiva’s conservation groups. Kathleen and Jim are highly dedicated to the environmental preservation efforts.

2.     Captiva Memorial Library

Most travelers staying on Captiva Island think they have to hike to Sanibel for a new beach read. MacIntosh Books + Paper and Gene’s Books Too are certainly worth visiting, but you don’t have to leave Captiva to get your book fix! Captiva Memorial Library has more books than you could ever want, and you can return them before you leave. This is convenient for vacationers who don’t have room to pack purchased books in their suitcase. To check out a book, you can either obtain a visitor card or apply for a non-resident library card in person.

3.     The Bubble Room Restaurant & Emporium

Locals know all about the Bubble Room’s eccentric atmosphere, but visitors tend to overlook it. The Bubble Room is—hands down—one of the best hidden gems on Captiva Island. Established in 1979 by the Farqhuarson family, this restaurant serves up delectable menu items in an atmosphere inspired by Christmas, nostalgic toys and Hollywood. Don’t forget to order a slice of Orange Crunch cake before you leave; their desserts are to die for! After your meal, head over to the Emporium & Gift Shop for all kinds of fun merchandise like jewelry, toys, gifts and Bubble Room souvenirs. On display, you'll find a variety of rare functional antiques, including jukeboxes and Shirley Temple's "Dreyerette" race car. As the owners say on their site, “You will always find something [at the Bubble Room] you have never seen before.”
