Sanibel Island continues to make a strong comeback as repair work on the beaches is close to completion. After being battered by multiple hurricanes over the past two years, including Hurricane Ian in 2022 and the back-to-back hits from Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024, the island’s recovery efforts have been non-stop. Now, with major beach restoration projects finishing up, Sanibel’s beautiful beaches are ready to welcome visitors this spring.

Blind Pass Beach Is Open Again
One of the most significant milestones in Sanibel Island’s recovery is the reopening of the Blind Pass Beach parking lot on January 17. This area was heavily impacted by Hurricane Milton, which buried the entire lot under layers of sand. Crews from Sanibel’s Department of Public Works (DPW) worked tirelessly to clear the hurricane debris and make improvements. They spent weeks removing sand, installing new signage, adding pitshell for better surface stability, clearing dead vegetation, and redesigning the parking layout for better accessibility. Thanks to these upgrades, Blind Pass Beach is now not only restored but also improved for both locals and tourists.
Lighthouse Beach Is Open Again
Lighthouse Beach, another beloved destination on Sanibel Island, also experienced severe damage. The combined damage from both of the late 2024 hurricanes eroded much of the sand, leaving the area in need of urgent restoration. To restore the beach and make it beautiful again, the city undertook a sand nourishment project. This involved hauling in beach-compatible sand to rebuild the shoreline. This restoration work, also completed in early January, has helped to stabilize the area and bring it closer to its pre-Ian state. The historic lighthouse is now surrounded by a refreshed beachfront and is ready for visitors to visit again.
