Bald Eagle Nesting Season Is Here on Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island has become a prime nesting spot for bald eagles thanks to its protected habitats, abundant food supply, and island conservation efforts. In Florida, the bald eagle population has grown significantly since the species was removed from the Endangered Species list in 2007. Sanibel’s residents and local wildlife organizations play a key role in supporting these birds and ensuring they have a safe environment to thrive.

Every year on Sanibel Island, bald eagle pairs return to the same nesting spots, often reusing and repairing existing nests. Some nests can become quite large, spanning up to 8 feet across and weighing several hundred pounds. Because of their distinct white heads and brown bodies, bald eagles are easy to spot around Sanibel Island.
