Art from Anguish: A New Sculpture from Sanibel Causeway Scraps

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, the Sanibel Causeway became a stark reminder of how much damage the storm did to Sanibel Island. However, out of the wreckage of the bridge, a new symbol of hope and resilience has emerged. Thanks to the work of Brooklyn-based artist Wendy Klemperer, a striking piece of art was created from the Sanibel Causeway.

Art in the Wake of Disaster

Wilson McCray, the gallery director of BIG ARTS on Sanibel Island was able to collect rebar from the destroyed Sanibel Causeway with permission of local authorities. This rebar, once part of the bridge now forms the backbone of a stunning panther sculpture created by Wendy Klemperer. Klemperer has a reputation for working with interesting and unconventional materials, and she was excited to take on the challenge of working with the saved rebar to create something new.

The New Sculpture

The panther sculpture that she created from pieces of the Sanibel Causeway is now on display outside of the BIG ARTS gallery. The panther sculpture is more than just a piece of art; it is a powerful symbol of Sanibel Island’s ongoing recovery. As McCray put it in an interview with NBC 2 news, “It’s testimony of recovery – it feels like that. Taking something that’s wreckage and devastation and turning it into something beautiful.” The sculpture not only represents the determination of the island’s community but also highlights the importance of preserving and protecting local wildlife.

Today, the Sanibel Causeway is standing and a crucial link between Sanibel Island and the mainland. However, the raw materials that were taken from the destroyed causeway have a new life that can inspire residents and tourists alike.

BIG ARTS

BIG ARTS, the gallery that now hosts this impressive sculpture, plays a crucial role in the island’s cultural life and community. By showcasing the panther sculpture, the gallery is supporting the artistic community and reminding all residents of the hard work and resilience that was displayed throughout the island in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. BIG ARTS offers classes, a beautiful gift shop, and plenty of other ways to enjoy art created by local Sanibel Island artists. You can visit BIG ARTS from Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM or on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM. Because the sculpture is located outside of BIG ARTS, you can see it outside of regular business hours.
