One of the most notable geographic features on Sanibel Island is the Sanibel Island Lighthouse. This lighthouse has been standing for over 139 years, including throughout the devastating Hurricane Ian that did tremendous damage to Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Let’s take a walk back through time to learn more about the history of this amazing lighthouse.

The Start of Sanibel Island Lighthouse
The Sanibel Island Lighthouse was first constructed after residents petitioned the government for one to be built. Residents started asking for the structure in the 1830s, as ships veered dangerously close to the shores. The funding for the lighthouse was eventually approved in 1883 in response to the growing number of cargo ships traveling through San Carlos Bay.
In 1884, the construction process began. The lighthouse was finished by August, despite delays. From that point on, the Sanibel Island Lighthouse has been the only operating lighthouse on the Gulf Coast between Egmont Key and Key West, making it a vital safety and architectural landmark.
The Modern Era of the Sanibel Island Lighthouse
A keeper lived in and operated the Sanibel Island Lighthouse through 1949 when the light became automated. The automation was completed in response to damage from a hurricane and growing concerns about erosion. The lighthouse was eventually added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, which protects it for future generations to enjoy its beauty.
When Hurricane Ian struck Sanibel and Captiva Islands in 2022, the lighthouse and station suffered incredible damage. The keeper’s house and outbuildings were completely destroyed. The lighthouse also lost one of its legs. While it was damaged by Hurricane Ian, repairs were made and the light has been shining again since early 2023.
