A Great Honor: Readers Digest Names Sanibel as Florida’s Most Charming Small Town

We all know that Sanibel Island is a gem and one of the best places on the planet, but it’s always nice to see other people saying it too! Reader’s Digest recently named Sanibel as Florida’s Most Charming Small Town. In their kind write-up, they spotlighted our amazing beaches, seashells, and wildlife. What makes Sanibel so special?

Sanibel Is Known for Beaches and Shells

Sanibel is known as a barrier island, which means that it is oriented horizontally instead of North-South like many other islands. As a result, Sanibel Island gets a disproportionate amount of shells. In fact, people from all over the world flock to Sanibel to try their hand at shelling, and the island hosts a shell show every year.

The beaches are designed with something for everyone. The Causeway Beaches are perfect for windsurfing and picnicking, and you can pull your car up to the water’s edge. Lighthouse Beach is the location of the historic Sanibel Lighthouse, and you can enjoy fishing off the T-dock fishing pier or walking on the nature trail through the wetlands. Sanibel Is Known for Wildlife

One of the most notable destinations in Sanibel is the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. This amazing refuge is home to wildlife that is hard to find in many other places, and the refuge also offers educational programs, fishing, birding, photography opportunities, biking, boating, and more. There are also numerous trails that make it easy to take in the beauty of the refuge. The longest trail is a 4-mile round trip trail that gives you the chance to see night herons, white ibises, and alligators.

Sanibel Is Known for Delicious Food

Finally, Sanibel is also known for its amazing food. We’ve covered some of our favorite places to eat on the island on our blog, and there are constantly new restaurants opening and other restaurants re-opening as the recovery from Hurricane Ian continues. From all-day breakfast in a charming environment at the Over Easy Café to key lime pie made with local ingredients at Gramma Dot’s, there is something for everyone.
