Sanibel Island is known around the globe for its natural beauty and serene environment, and it attracts thousands of tourists every year. While popular attractions like the island’s famous shelling beaches draw many, Sanibel also offers a wealth of lesser-known gems that are a great way to have fun without the crowds. Here are four of our favorite points of interest that are off the beaten path.

The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village
For a fascinating journey back in time, the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village is a must-see. This museum showcases the island’s history through restored buildings and artifacts dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors can explore nine historic buildings that have been moved to the museum property, including a schoolhouse, a post office, and numerous homes. The museum offers a look at the daily lives of Sanibel’s first residents.
Bailey Tract
While the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is one of Sanibel Island’s most popular attractions, the Bailey Tract offers a more secluded experience. This is part of the larger refuge, but it is not as popular and features trails that move through freshwater marshes and mangroves. It’s a great place to spend time for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts who want to get away from the crowds during busy periods.
The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) Preserves
The SCCF preserves are an excellent destination for those interested in the island’s unique ecosystems. Despite boasting great views of native wildlife, these preserves are generally less popular than the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Throughout them, you can find educational exhibits on local wildlife, habitats, and conservation efforts. Some preserves are bike-friendly, while others only allow foot traffic to help protect the habitat. While some preserves are not open to the public, you can check the list of what is currently open online before you go.
Sanibel’s Less Popular Beaches
Sanibel Island is dotted with beaches that offer a more secluded beach experience. Tarpon Bay Beach and Gulfside City Park Beach are two such spots where visitors can enjoy the sun and water without the same crowds as some of the other beaches. These beaches are great for picnicking, swimming, or relaxing with a good book, and they are just as beautiful as the rest of Sanibel Island. Additionally, these beaches often have excellent shelling opportunities, rivaling the more popular Bowman’s Beach.
